1983 is the right time period and "Made for TV" sounds familiar.  You are the best.

I found SOMETHING!!!  I couldn't find the lyrics but I did find references to a song called "So Afraid of the Russians" by a group called Made for TV.  Apparently it is some kind of new wave song from 1983.  Could this be it?
