"The Runner"  by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.  Might have been covered by another band, but that's the one I know.

I haven't heard this one since about 1987. the lyrics I remember are:...........through the night, through the dawn, behind you another runner is born. don't look back, you've been there, see the mist form as your breath hits the air.....................The refrain goes something like:..........and you will run your time,a shooting star across the sky (I think there's more to it)............... . Sorry. That's all I remember, except that it's probably older than 1986, the vocalist is male, and this question has been driving me nuts for years. If anyone can tell me artist & title, you'd have my eternal gratitude. Thanks.
